Design Approach

As my client places a profound emphasis on how people interact with architecture and how it makes one feel, i have decided that my design approach will place an underlining importance on Natural Light and Water, and how these elements can intertwine with architecture, to determine the overall felling and interaction felt by the architecture.

LIGHT
Light always involves the removal of darkness in the unfolding of something.  In terms of architecture, natural light and shadowing involves the removal of darkness to unfold many aspects of architecture, these include;
- interaction with the building, which is influenced/manipulated by the way natural light and shadows fall int a space
- the sense of gentleness or harshness felt
- how it makes a person fell and what it evokes for that person
- finally how it can change a persons perception, and or mood.

All of the different aspects of light i wish to include in my design for my client.  My design  will be determined and altered in accordance with natural light and shadows.

WATER
A colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid that forms aquatic environments.  In relation to architecture, water generally is not in cooperated with an architectural form. However for the purposes of the building design of my client water will be a central aspect.  The body of water in my architecture will portray the following;
- the central body of waetr will be controled so it is not trafficable or for use
- to create a unique feel, sound and colour throughout the builfing.
- alter and affect the mood of the client in different areas of the house
- to increase the privacy for different zones in the house

All of the different aspects of water i wish to include in my design for my client.  My design  will be determined and altered in accordance with the body of water.

Changes
Master & Guest Room
  • Bedrooms should be grouped together, although the study / guest bedroom should be associated with the public areas of the house rather than the other bedrooms. Nevertheless, ensure that this room is also able to maintain some degree of privacy when in use by guests.
  • Studio space in bedroom must be separated metaphorically
  • The bedroom and studio space must interact in some way with the exterior shallow body of water (pond)
  • Must not be visible from the gallery or any public areas of the house, it is to be strictly a private area
  • The master bedroom and guest room will not be grouped together to ensure the privacy in both rooms
  • the master and guest bedroom wont be grouped and will be separated by the body of water to increase privacy
W.I.R.
  • the walk in robe should be used as a buffer between the bedroom and ensuite. Can also be used as an entrance into bedroom suite, but then must have doors on robes to make it look better
  • The master bedroom will include a ensuite and walk in robe W.I.R.
  • The W.I.R. Is considered as a separate room as well as the ensuit, therefore it will act as a buffer between the bedroom and ensiut
Master Bedroom
  • would like a small balcony off of the master bedroom
  • The master bedroom will include a Juliet Balcony
Kitchen
  • kitchen to be the hub of the house
  • The kitchen is not to be totally different to the rest of the house, but it is not intended to exemplify the same of the clients works, unlike the rest of the house
  • The kitchen will be a hub in the sense that it will act as a break from the rest of the houses design scheme. However the main hub of the house will be the pubic gallery
Galleries
  • kids play room to be associated with bedrooms 2+3

  • As the kids room is replaced with a public and private gallery, it is not possible to make them associated with the bedrooms
Garage
  • garage to have internal access from house

  • As adjacent to the garage will be a laundry and storage space there will be internal access to the house

    NOTES:

You will notice that there are no comments above in relation to style or form for the design. You will need to review this brief in relation to your previous exercise (when you wrote a brief for your research designer), reconcile the differences, and use that information to determine the stylistic cues appropriate to your design. This means that it should be possible to identify who your research subject is based on the style of your design. Remember, the tutors are there to help, so ask them if you are unsure of how to do this! Consider the processes you went through with the paper folding exercise in relation to abstracting a design, and also the work done creating posters in relation to your research subject. These two exercises revolved around the underlying design cues in that work, and how to read them effectively. You can now take those results and reverse the process - take the abstracted results you obtained and turn them back into more complex forms for their expression in a residential context.

As we want to use this exercise as the basis for representational studies, you will be expected  to finalise the brief and develop your design within the next two weeks, leaving you with 3 weeks to prepare the material for your final submission. During the week 10 studio you will be asked to demonstrate your reconciled brief, and in week 11 you will be asked to show your resolved design. This is your big push week! If you do not succeed in finalising the design in time for the week 11 studio, it is unlikely you will be able to complete the assignment itself for the end of the semester...

If you have any questions, ask them TODAY!! Answers will be collated and added to the blog for all students to see and make use of.

    Proposed Site

The proposed site 5 Wyargine street Balmoral is located within 60 meters of the coastline, situated on a 702 square meter block.  The East facing block is located on the western side of Wyargine street, between Stanton and Edwards Bay Road.  The site is withing walking distance to public transport (max 95m), Balmoral's main Esplanade (173m) and the nearest shopping center is within 500m of the site.  The site is a slightly irregular shape with a frontage of 16m, and divided by a retaining wall creating two flat sections at different heights on the site.

The site contains a two storey house (which has been demolished and replaced with a new dwelling), and a garage at street level.  The block is raised above street level due to rock and other topographical features, placing in on a high stop, overlooking the opposing five storey residential flat building, with an array of garages and car spots accessed from Wyargine street.
